Hotel Zaguán is situated in the middle of the “Carrera del Darro”, between two bridges: “Cabrera” and “Espinosa”. In the fourteenth century it was the “Cauracha” suburb, a number of walls, which delimited the low “Albaycín” district, next to the river bank. The “Tableros” bridge (Bab El-Difaf in Arab) whose monumental remains are found near the hotel, connected the “Albaycín” neighbourhood to the “Puerta de las Armas” (Arms Gate) in the Alhambra “Alcazaba”, leading to the “Axares” or Health neighbourhood. From Hotel Zaguán you can see the most beautiful towers of the Nasrid “Alcazaba”, dating from the twelfth century: the “Vela” or “Campana” (the watch and bell tower), the “Puerta de Armas”, the “Homenaje” (the keep tower) and its fortifications. The very ancient galleries giving access to the rooms are supported by stone columns from “Sierra Elvira” and marble from “Macael”. |
